It’s getting closer! Valentime’s! It’s such a fun time of year. I love all the pink and red, but mostly I LOVE all the chocolate! Dark is my favorite for anyone who was wondering….Anyway! So I just got off of the Whole 30 diet, which was amazing because these Larabars I made held me over, but I was dying for some chocolate the whole time I was on it! I know, sugar just follows me wherever I go. And I couldn’t have any of course, but that didn’t stop me from being inspired for a really fun Valentine’s gift! The A Beautiful Mess blog recently made this adorable Jewelry Box holder with a photo attached to the top and glazed in epoxy. It was the perfect DIY for my box of chocolates idea. So without further ado, I introduce you to: the Jewelry Box of Chocolates!! Tadaaa! (Well, I wanted to say Box of Chocolates Jewelry box but that was just too much, lol)
It’s a super cute and fun gift for any Gal on Galentine’s or Valentine’s 🙂
Isn’t it fab?!?
This is what you’ll need:
A wooden box from a craft store / paint / modeling clay / foam sheet with glue backing / Clear casting epoxy
This is so much simpler than it seems! The box I got had a lip on the top, which worked perfectly well and helped the chocolates sit on the top better.
Start by modeling your chocolates. This clay is my fav for this type of stuff. I used it to make my donut ornaments last year too.
Make your shapes and figure out your placement.
Next you can bake your clay! And while your clay is baking, go ahead and paint your box. Simple acrylic paint will do just fine.
Don’t worry too much about the top since you’ll be covering it with the foam sheet. Cut the sheet down to size so that it fits snuggly into the top of the box. The sheet I got was sticker-back, so it helped a lot when I finally had to stick it down.
Once you are sure it fits snuggly, grab your cooled down chocolates and use them to trace on the back of your foam.
You can cut the shapes out with an exacto knife or scissors, but the exacto knife works best.
Once you’ve positioned them and made sure that your chocolates fit like you like them, pull the sticker backing off and stick the foam to the wood. This is also when you paint your chocolates! Have fun and be creative 🙂 I made some of mine milk, dark and even coffee flavor. (yes, I had too much fun on this, lol)
Now you mix your glaze epoxy EXACTLY as instructed on the label. Grab a strip of painters tape or masking tape and place it around the box top. The next step after you’ve painted your chocolates, mixed your epoxy and set everything on the box like you want it to look is to pour the epoxy on the top of everything. Again, the A Beautiful Mess blog has a VIDEO on how they pour the epoxy and use a hair blow dryer to get the bubbles out! Watch it here!
WARNING: I would suggest opening the box and laying it down so that both of the box openings are laying on the table. I learned from experience that the epoxy can drip INTO your box if you glaze it while it’s in it’s closed form. Opening the box and setting a paper towel underneath the part that you’ll glaze will keep you from pouring glaze in the inside and, therefore, gluing your box SHUT! (again, take it from meeeee!)
Again, this is when I’d just poured the glaze in. (Don’t do it like this!)
Let it dry for 24 hours, peel the tape off and tadaa! You’ve got a box of love!
So purty 🙂
Those chocolates actually look really good….hmm, I could eat one right now…
Now just package it up with a ribbon and give it your Galentine!!
I love Valentine’s!
