Hello! September is officially here and we’re off into our month long theme of Refreshment. A time to reevaluate ourselves and gain tips and tools along the way to reach our goals. I’m in the process of doing that as well with this blog. I stopped blogging this summer for whatever reasons, but when I decided to pick it back up I realized that I actually had a block, a mental roadblock.
My heart had long wanted to begin anew with Well-Made Heart, but I think my head and even my physical self was not in the game.[blockquote_sty ver=”2″ border_size=”4px” color=”#eb6846″]Do you ever feel that way? Like when you know what you want and need to do, but there is a roadblock that actually stops you from accomplishing it?[/blockquote_sty] Great, I’m glad I’m not the only one! That roadblock isn’t laziness or just apathy; it’s a very real thing that almost everybody deals with at some point in their lives. It’s what stops you short and keeps you from moving forward on your life goals. I had to come to terms with my mental roadblock and find a way to get around it, and you can to!
If you feel like you may have a mental roadblock right now that is stopping you from accomplishing some life goals, or continuing on a path you have started, try out some of these roadblock buster tips so that you can get back on your way!
Often times it’s hard for us to admit truths to ourselves about why we may have given up on a goal. Most of the time however, the reason is FEAR. That four letter word crushes dreams and disintegrates goals. It paralyzes us and confuses us until we actually believe its lies! Other times, the roadblock may be because of something such as a hardship. In these cases it is very important to take the necessary time to deal with that hardship on its own, apart from our goal. Once enough time has been dedicated to getting through a hardship, you can pick back up where you left off.
Try filling out something like this simple chart below. It’s helpful to actually see in writing why you are stuck, so that you can get passed it. Click image to download a PDF.
It can be really easy to get stuck halfway on our goal road because we don’t know where we are going! Losing sight is common, especially if we can’t remember where we started. Try going backwards and retrace or map out your goal from beginning to end. You may say, well hey, I don’t really know what my end goal is. In that case I say at least map out what the next step is from the point where you are. That will jumpstart you back on your journey with enough momentum to get the ball rolling. This S.M.A.R.T Chart is the perfect tool to help you do just that. If you’ve never filled out a SMART chart this is the perfect opportunity! It’s a really concise and clear way to see the steps of your goals.
You’ve touched some of these questions in filling out the S.M.A.R.T. chart- now it’s time to really dig deeper. The first question is to ask yourself, what is my motivation behind this? It’s the WHY. Figure out what your motivation behind your goal is, whether it’s monetary (adding additional income monthly), self-help (like becoming healthy etc.), or even a personal goal (like swimming across the atlantic, or something like that lol), everything has a motivation behind. Figure out all the motivations behind your goals and write them out.
The next part to this is to ask yourself, is that a realistic motivation for this goal? This is the “A” in the S.M.A.R.T. chart. Sometimes our motivations don’t fuel our goals enough. You may be motivated to be skinny, but the massive goal of training for a triathlon while becoming certified in Yoga and Zumba in a span of a month won’t be fueled by that motivation. In that case, it would be a lot better to start off by eating healthier meals. Sometimes we stop short and get stuck at that roadblock because we’ve run out of fuel. It’s good to revaluate your goals to see if your motivations will fuel your goal to the end!
As you know, September is the month of refreshment and renewing! Now would be a great time to dust off those goals that we have given up on, or confront that mental roadblock that’s stopping you. Together let’s refocus our goals and make this second half of the year even better than the first!
