No-Sew Doggie Cape

So my sewing machine broke this weekend. Yep. Well, actually I’m not entirely sure if it’s broken, BUT if it’s not sewing it’s broken to me! (I have to get a second opinion). Anyway, I intended to make Lulu a sweater of sorts since she is ALWAYS freezing this time of year (and her sweater from last year fits too snug lol) but then the sewing thing happened. SO I came up with a No-Sew doggie cape instead! It’s pretty cute, super easy and it looks good on her, I think. Then again that’s my momma opinion talking.

I wasn’t too sure of what material I could make it since most material unravels BUT I found this felt like blanket from IKEA recently and it was perrrfect for the job! It’s a rather cheap blanket that is huge and can be used for lots of projects (or as its original blanket intention, 🙂 ). Since it’s feltish it doesn’t unravel at the ends which is the most important thing when making anything no sew.

A cape shape is basically a semicircle with another smaller semicircle cut in the middle. Lulu is small but she’s long so I measured and knew that I wanted the end to be a little longer than the edges at her sides.

So I measured and made the back portion 9 inches long from the smaller neck circle. ( For that circle I just estimated).

And I measured the sides and made sure they were 7 1/2 inches long. Once you have those marks, you can connect the dots and draw your semi-circle and cut it out.

Mine measured roughly 22 inches, but it depends on your doggie!

After that I knew I wanted some little designs so I found some pieces of extra scrap felt I had and cut out little leaves.

For this you REALLY need a Heatnbond or other iron on adhesive to stick your designs on your cape. This is what really makes it no-sew. Follow the instructions and cut out your leaves and use the heat n bond to adhere them to the cape.

I used green and white, but I wish I’d had some red to make it more festive.

After you’ve added your designs you can decide HOW you want the cape to stay on your dog. I went for a piece of fabric that can be opened and closed with velcro.

I cut out a pickle looking piece that was roughly 5 inches long. After adding my designs to it, I used Velcro dots to adhere to the cape.

Measure it on your dog and stick the fabric piece to the larger piece by adding the opposite velcro dot on the right place.

And voila!

You’ve got a doggie cape!

Let’s see the model in action!

Yeaaahhh, she wasn’t entirely thrilled but hey, at least she’ll be warm! And there you have it- a quick no-sew cape for your doggie! And you have lots of blanket left over to make many more!
