When’s the last time you ate a Candy Apple? Was it at the State Fair? Was it last Fall? Or was it, I never have, like me?? <— I know! I actually don’t think I have ever EATEN a candy apple, even though I’ve been given/gifted them before! Anyway, this weekend I stumbled on a super easy recipe to make these candy apples and it was so fast and simple - way less complicated than I thought they were!
If you want something more fun than just straight candy to take to parties/work/anything this Halloween, how about some Candy Apples! Disclaimer- to all my dietician friends (you know who you are- LOOK AWAY! I’m about to coat a perfectly delicious and already sweet fruit with an incredible amount of sucrose because it looks pretty… cringe-worthy, I know!)
This was my first batch of candy apples and I wanted a “sinister” dark look so I went with black food coloring- but for the future, I definitely want to try different colors to see what looks best. I do recommend putting a LOT of food coloring if you want the black. I didn’t put as much as I should have and so the color was more of a purple than a full black. Still pretty but more food coloring will make it richer.
Halloween Candy Apples
Ingredients
- 6 Granny Smith Apples
- 2 cups Sugar
- 3/4 cups Water
- 1/2 cup light Corn Syrup
- Black Food Coloring
- Parchment Paper
- skewers I used cake pop sticks
Instructions
-
Place parchment paper on a baking tray and insert skewers into apples.
-
In a medium pot, combine the water, sugar, corn syrup, and food coloring over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
-
Once dissolved, you can turn up the heat to boil. Allow the caramel to boil until it reaches the hard crack stage (150°c/310°F on a candy thermometer). Typically, the mixture will be very thick when stirred with a spoon at this stage.
-
Dip the apples into the mixture and set on the parchment paper to dry for about an hour.
It’s best not to put your apples into the fridge once cooled since the condensation might mess with the sugar. Also, I recommend wrapping them up in cellophane to give out as gifts!
There were about 5 others where this one came from but I’m glad to report they fulfilled their destiny before photoshoot time lol.
I hope you get to make some of these guys this fall! Again, if I can make them after never having either made or eaten them before, I definitely think you can too!
