Ginger Pear Crumble

When I was in grad school I went through this random stage where I wanted to #bakeallthethings. I’m a huge fan of baking but it was through those oh, I dunno 4 months in the Virginia fall (where they actually have a fall) that I learned all about baking Fall items. You know, pies, crusts, tarts and one of my most fav: crumbles. I think the first thing I actually tried was a crumble. Messy, easy and fast I became a huge fan of the throw it all in there and shake it up concept. Fast-forward almost 5 years (geeze louise) and Fall will still make me run back into the kitchen and pull out ALL of my baking items. But it’s not like it all comes rushing back to me naturally, I have to ease myself into it. And that’s why I always start with a crumble; the Ginger Pear Crumble to be exact.

I think I like this particular crumble because I like Pears. They’re curvy, gritty, soft, sweet (what or who am I really describing here? haha) but I do love apples too. I just think Pears are underused! So, for you friends that are feeling Fallish, try this crumble! I promise it’s simple and you most definitely don’t have to be a baking expert!

Pear Mix:

  • 5 or 6 pears (not too soft or ripe) peeled and cut into thin slices
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger

Topping:

  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup cold butter cut into pieces

Optional: 1/2 cup of Vanilla wafer or manilla cookie crumbled

  1. Heat your oven to 375 degree F.
  2. In a bowl mix all the ingredients of the pear mix together, until all the pears are coated. Pour the mix into glass 8-inch dish.
  3. In the same bowl, mix the brown sugar and regular sugar together. Throw in the cold butter pieces and cut it into the mix with a knife until the pieces get smaller and smaller. Add your cookie crumble to the mix and mix it all up.
  4. Pour on top of the pears and pop that baby into the oven. Let it bake for about 40-50 mins or until the pears are soft and the top is golden brown.

Now something I learned is that yes, you can eat it right away and let it actually crumble, but you can also let it sit overnight so that when you cut into it, it stays more in pie form. Warm it up, add some vanilla ice cream and voila! Duh-lish!

Happy baking.
